The right 4WD suspension upgrade is the package that matches your exact vehicle, its permanent accessories, its changing load, the way it is driven and the height change actually required. Before choosing a kit, identify the vehicle precisely, record front and rear loads separately, describe towing and touring scenarios, note existing modifications and decide what problem the upgrade must solve.
There is no useful one-size-fits-all answer such as “fit the heaviest springs” or “every tourer needs a two-inch lift”. A good recommendation starts with evidence.
1. Identify the exact vehicle
Record more than the badge on the tailgate. Depending on the application, useful details can include:
• make and model
• series and production period
• build year and month
• body or cab type
• engine and drivetrain
• wheelbase or tray configuration
• factory suspension option
• systems such as KDSS, HBMC, self-levelling suspension or ADAS where relevant
Two vehicles that look similar can require different components. Use the current Tough Dog suspension selector or catalogue pathway and stop if the vehicle identity is uncertain. A registration lookup may help narrow the vehicle, but it cannot see accessories, normal load or undocumented modifications.
2. State the problem in plain language
Write down what you want to improve before talking about parts. Examples include:
• the vehicle sits low under its normal permanent load
• load changes substantially between weekdays and trips
• the current shocks feel poorly controlled on repeated corrugations
• extra clearance is needed for a defined use
• the existing suspension is worn or damaged
• the vehicle is being prepared for a governed GVM pathway
Separate symptoms from diagnosis. “The rear sits lower when the caravan is connected” is useful evidence. “It needs the stiffest rear spring” is a conclusion that still needs testing.
3. List permanent front accessories
The front setup often changes after a bull bar, winch, battery, underbody protection or other permanent equipment is fitted. Record the exact product and its published or measured mass. Where an accessory replaces a factory part, note the item removed as well as the item installed.
The Tough Dog catalogue selection flow asks for the front setup because the correct front spring or assembled strut can depend on the equipment that stays on the vehicle. Do not turn a rough accessory estimate into a self-selected part number.
4. Separate rear constant load from trip load
Constant rear load is what the vehicle normally carries: a tray, canopy, drawers, tools or permanently installed equipment. Variable load can include passengers, luggage, camping gear, work cargo and the changing load associated with towing.
Make at least two honest scenarios:
1) the vehicle in its normal day-to-day condition
2) the vehicle in its repeatable touring, work or towing condition
If the 4WD is lightly loaded for most of the year, say so. If it carries tools every working day, that is a different brief. Keep front and rear inputs visible rather than rolling them into one accessory total.
5. Obtain useful measurements
Record ride height on level ground using repeatable points, tyre pressures and the same load condition. A licensed public weighbridge or suitable mobile vehicle-weighing service can replace estimates with measured mass. A single gross reading is not automatically an axle report. Ask the operator which measurements the facility can correctly provide and keep the ticket with the vehicle build record.
6. Describe towing properly
Do not provide only the trailer’s advertised weight or the vehicle’s headline towing capacity. Record the actual trailer configuration, typical loaded condition, coupling load where properly measured, how often it is towed and what remains in the tow vehicle.
Suspension can help manage a correctly loaded vehicle, but a spring, shock or air-assist product does not create permission to exceed GVM, GCM, axle, tyre, towbar or trailer ratings. If those numbers are unclear, pause the product decision and obtain qualified advice.
7. Choose height for a reason
Height affects more than appearance. It can change alignment, steering geometry, driveline angles, brake-line and sensor relationships, headlight aim and access to suspension travel. Wheel and tyre changes can also contribute to total vehicle-height change.
Write down the obstacle, travel or packaging problem the height is intended to address. Then ask for the least change that solves that problem within the exact application and applicable approval pathway. Australian national guidance must be read with the rules of the state or territory where the vehicle is registered.
8. Match springs and shocks as a system
Springs support the vehicle at the selected load and height. Shock absorbers control suspension movement. They perform different jobs, so replacing one does not automatically correct a problem with the other.

9. Record existing modifications and condition
Tell the dealer about wheels, tyres, upper control arms, panhard rods, caster correction, airbags, spacers, body lift, previous spring changes and any unknown components. Ask for worn bushes, leaking dampers, damaged mounts, uneven tyre wear and loose or cracked components to be inspected before a new package is selected.
An upgrade should not be used to conceal a fault.
10. Take this brief to the selector or dealer
Bring:
• exact vehicle details
• front and rear accessory inventory
• daily and loaded scenarios
• measured mass or weighbridge ticket where available
• towing information
• current ride-height measurements
• intended use and terrain
• existing modifications
• the problem you want the package to address
The result should be an exact vehicle application and component list, including mandatory supporting parts, installation steps and post-fit checks. If the selector cannot verify the vehicle, find an authorised Tough Dog dealer rather than substituting a visually similar model, year or part number.
Should I fit suspension before or after accessories?
Select suspension around the configuration the vehicle will genuinely use. If major permanent accessories are not yet fitted, provide their exact specifications and discuss sequencing with the installer. Final ride-height, alignment and load checks should use the completed configuration where practical.
Are heavier springs always better for towing?
No. Spring choice must match the vehicle’s normal permanent load and changing use. A spring selected only for an occasional maximum can be poorly matched when the vehicle is lightly loaded.
Do new shocks increase carrying capacity?
No. Shocks control suspension movement. They do not, by themselves, raise an approved GVM or axle rating.
Can I choose a kit from lift height alone?
No. Lift height does not identify vehicle variant, load, shock duty or required supporting components.
What if the selector cannot verify my vehicle?
Use the manual dealer route. Do not substitute a visually similar model, year or part number.
